The commune of Castagneto Carducci, 194 m.a.s.l. and 6 km. from the coast, covers the areas of Bolgheri to the north and Donoratico to the south (on the via Aurelia, the first Roman road)
The countryside is dominated by the 1000 year old castle belonging to the "della Gherardesca" nobility, with whom the local population has constantly fought for civil rights.
- Museum Casa Carducci
- Della Gherardesca Castle
- Churchese: Parrocchial, SS. Crocifisso, Madonna del Carmine

These days Castagneto is famed for it's unpolluted surroundings, tranquility and the high level of local culinary produce.
"Quanto darei per rivedere solamente i miei colli
selvaggiamente ridenti nella primavera fra i monti e il mare!"
(G. Carducci)
There are numerous reasons to extol the virtues of this tiny hamlet:
- The wine alone is reason enough. Bolgheri produces Sassicaia (amongst others), the father of the supertuscan wines.
- Another exceptional reason are the horses, bred with love and care for centuries. Ribot arguably the finst racehorse of all time came from here.
- The poet Giosue Carducci spent parts of his childhood and most of his adult life here drawing inspiration for the books and poetry that have made him a star in the italian literary world second only to Danté.
- The Castle
- Churches: SS.Jacopo e Cristoforo, S.Sebastiano, S.Antonio
- The cypress tree avenue
- Nonna Lucia's cemerty
- WWF OASIS nearby: visits can be organised through WWF Piombino 0565-224361
We could continue forever listing the attractions here, but the best advice we could give would be come and see for yourself, come and discover all the surprises hidden in this magical corner of Tuscany.
I cipressi che a Bolgheri alti e schiett van a San Guido un duplice filar.... quasi in corsa giganti giovinetti, mi balzaron incontro e mi guadar... e mi riconobber e ben torni, torni ormai.. . Bisbigliaron ver me col capo chino.. Perchè non scendi? Perchè non ristai? fresa è la sera ed a te noto il cammino
(G. Carducci)
